Taking Our Message To Bonn Climate Conference June 2023

Following on from our COP27 Official Side Event in Egypt entitled Dealing with military and conflict related emissions under the UNFCCC we are delighted to be part of a side event at the Bonn Climate Conference in June. The event will also address military emissions.

Cover for report 'Military and Conflict-Related Emissions'One of the recommendations in our report  (May 2022) Military and Conflict Emissions: Kyoto to Glasgow and Beyond launched at Bonn last year was for military emissions to be included in the Global Stocktake.

The global stocktake is designed to enable countries and other stakeholders to see where they’re collectively making progress toward meeting the goals of the Paris Agreement – and where they’re not. It looks at everything related to where the world stands on climate action and – critically identifying gaps. It will make its first full report at COP28 this year held in Dubai with the next GST in 2028.

SIDE EVENT GLOBAL STOCKTAKE

Our session is entitled ‘Closing the Global Stocktake’s military emissions gap and we will be joined again by lead author of our May 2022 report, Axel Michaelowa – a climate negotiations expert whose presentation at Sharm El Sheikh concerned military emissions under-reporting to UNFCCC. Other speakers are Linsey Cottrell (CEOBS), Lennard De Klerk (GHG Accounting of War) and Deborah Burton (TPNS).

1st page of GST Submission 'MILITARY EMISSIONS'The event builds on our submission to the Global Stocktake – a process where NGOs can offer ideas on the process of the GST or, as in our case, highlight a gap in knowledge on emissions.

Our submission is a collective one, signed by Conflict and Environment Observatory, Concrete Impacts, The Costs of War Project, Norwegian People’s Aid, Scientists for Global Responsibility, Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, Zoï Environment Network, and Tipping Point North South.

Side event: Bonn SB 58 panel discussion,
14:45-16:00 CEST, 7 June 2023

The event has been co-organised by CEOBS, Zoï Environment Network, Initiative on GHG Accounting of War, Tipping Point North South, Green Wave, Ecoaction and Concrete Impacts.

Topic:

Military greenhouse gas emissions are estimated at 5.5% of global emissions, and military spending is rising sharply. Because reporting military emissions to the UNFCCC is voluntary, data is often absent or incomplete – this is the military emissions gap. Join us in Bonn, or online via YouTube, as we outline what needs to change within the UNFCCC, and how the Global Stocktake is an opportunity to begin to remedy this.

Speakers:

The status of military emissions reporting | Linsey Cottrell, CEOBS
Climate Damage caused by Russia’s war in Ukraine | Lennard de Klerk, Initiative on GHG Accounting of War
Military emissions in the Global Stocktake | Axel Michaelowa, Perspectives Climate Group and University of Zurich
The role of civil society | Deborah Burton, Tipping Point North South
Moderator | Ellie Kinney, CEOBS
